The Marine Technology Abstracts database contains bibliographic information providing a reference and description for over 82,000 technical articles, reports, books, conference and transaction papers and other material on all aspects of maritime technology, dating back as far as 1940 and drawn from all major marine engineering publications, published worldwide in at least 10 languages.

The database is a result of a collaboration between the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology and British Maritime Technology.
Topics covered include:-

- Ship and vessel descriptions;
- Design and construction;
- Ship powering, equipment, maintenance, repair, conversion;
- Cargo handling/port design and operation;
- Safety at sea/environmental protection;
- Coastal and ocean engineering/offshore technology;
- Fluid mechanics, hydrodynamics, hydraulics and aerodynamics;
- Ship resistance and propulsion, motions, seakeeping and manoeuvring;
- Structural response, material properties, corrosion and fouling;
- Naval vessels and defence technology.

Each record consists of up to seven fields, containing the following data:

- Index number (assigned by BMT or IMarEST);
- Title of article, report etc.;
- Source information, including title of source document, date, page numbers etc.;
- Author(s);
- Language;
- Ship name(s), if specific ship data is provided;
- Abstract, providing a free text description of the item;
- Keyword(s), providing a structured language description of the document.

The abstracts purport to be fair summaries of the articles, papers etc., but neither BMT nor IMarEST accept responsibility for statements made in the original documents, nor do they necessarily with their contents.

The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology

"The international membership body and learned society for marine professionals"

The IMarEST is the international professional membership body and learned society offering chartered status to qualified marine scientists, technologists and engineers. The Institute is the largest marine organization of its kind, with a worldwide membership of 16,000 marine professionals in over 100 countries.
