Summary

The report briefly surveys previous experimental and theoretical work on the slamming of circular cylinders. On the basis of this survey and data from recent experiments at the Wolfson Marine Craft Unit of Southampton University the influence of inclined impact and beam dynamics on the resulting stresses is calculated for a wide range of wave conditions.

The statistical distributions of the estimated stresses are analysed to provide data for the calculation of slamming loads on fixed offshore structures using simple formulae in which the slamming coefficients incorporate both the member dynamics and the sea wave statistics.

Results are presented in the form of slamming coefficients and associated stress calculation methods for extreme values and fatigue damage. These may also be used for slamming during jacket launching.
