Summary

This report is the second in the series covering the Research Investigation for the Improvement of Ship Mooring Methods set up by the Chamber of Shipping of the United Kingdom, and should be read in conjunction with the first report, which was published by the British Ship Research Association in November 1967.* The present report covers the further investigations, examinations, and proposals relating to tanker and bulk-carrier mooring operations. Simpler methods of determining wind and current forces are developed and the considerations involved in the use of steel-wire ropes are examined in some depth.

As was done in the first part of this investigation, every opportunity has been taken to seek advice and information from as many sources and individuals as possible. For the sake of brevity the list of acknowledgements has been limited to the additional sources consulted during this second part of the investigation and must be regarded as supplementary to the acknowledgements to individuals and organisations made in NS. 179, most of whom have been kind enough to help again.

The Study team wishes to express their appreciation of the assistance and co-operation received from all concerned and not least from the masters, officers, and ratings of ships visited both British and foreign.
