Summary

This is the first report of a comprehensive study sponsored by the Chamber of Shipping of the United Kingdom into ship mooring methods. The objects of the study are to recommend measures for improving the efficiency, economy, and safety of the mooring operation.

The report investigates the basic considerations, which should be taken into account when devising the mooring system for all types of vessel, and examines in detail the problems confronting existing dry-cargo ships.

The investigation considers the present methods of connecting and restraining vessels and mooring-line patterns, the capabilities of which are assessed. The forces acting on a moored ship are investigated to provide a basis on which to develop data for determining economic and meaningful requirements for mooring systems. Mooring-line materials are studied to evaluate their ability to fulfil the requirements of improved mooring systems.

The report concludes with proposals for improving mooring efficiency in existing dry-cargo ships. Preliminary suggestions are made for future dry-cargo tonnage and areas are specified in which further research and/or trials may be necessary.
